Maille Sustainable Gift SetPremium | Innovative | Sustainable
This project is in response to my Second Year brief for BA (Hons) Sustainable Product Design at Falmouth University. I worked in collaboration with Maille UK, which is part of the Unilever group. Maille is a French condiments company which was founded in 1747. It sells high quality products to “discerning food lovers” who look for special and unique ingredients. This project is about mixing product and packaging and showing how it is possible to be premium and sustainable at the same time. My final design is a gift set which includes a wooden oak box and a set of products to fill with Maille’s condiments. The gift set is sofisticated and premium, and has a sustainable aspect. It is smart enough to be presented on the table at a dinner party and is not bulky. This gift set could be sold in homeware stores such as The Conran Shop or Selfridges and would encourage the customers who buy the set to discover and buy the Maille products. Inside the box is a wooden oak board on which to put the 3 ceramic pots, the stainless steel bowl and the glass vinegrette bottle. In the ceramic pots goes the mustard from the Eco refills purchased online. The customer can buy a big jar of gherkins and can place a few of them in the stainless steel bowl, to avoid having an unpleasant piece of packaging on the table. Any vinaigrette can be made to go in the glass bottle with the cork stopper. The customer can buy olive oil and vinegar from the Maille boutiques and make their own favourite vinaigrette. There are also a stainless steel fork to pick up the gherkins and 3 stainless steel spoons to serve the mustard. The mustard Eco refills are innovative and sustainable. The packaging is made of layers of currugated card and a black card sleeve, which are both recyclable and dematerialized. It’s dimensions have been chosen to fit those of the Royal Mail’s large letter. The refill pouches have the graphics of the mustard it contains and are made of card with a wax coat sealing inside. They can be ordered on Maille’s e-Boutique as packs of 3 pouches. The wooden box is made of European oak so it is a locally sourced material for the European Maille boutiques. It is durable and can be re-use for other purposes than simply storing the gift set products. Photographs, letters and recipes are examples of the many things that can be kept in the box. |
